Version 10.3.0

Release Date

April, 27th 2023

Compatibility

Android 5.1 (Lollipop), Android 6 (Marshmallow), Android 7 and 7.1 (Nougat), Android 8 and 8.1 (Oreo), Android 9.0 (Pie), Android 10.0, Android 11.0 (R), Android 12.0 (S), Android 13.0 (Tiramisu)

This version adds support for notifications and one-way communication from event organisers.

What’s New

We are bringing support for notifications in the mobile application. When installing the app, you were possibly asked to allow any notifications from LionsBase mobile, but we have not used this channel until today.

Right now notifications will be related to messages sent by event organisers to the actual participants. In fact, a new feature included in this version is a one-way communication channel from the organiser(s) to the participants of a given calendar event. This will be particularly useful for last-minute communication.

Menu

Enabling Notifications

If you are unsure if you enabled the notifications for the LionsBase mobile app, you can double check and enable them like that:

  • Open Settings

  • Open Notifications > App Settings > (All apps) LionsBase

You should see something similar to this:

Enabling notifications

Reading Messages

The messages you received are visible on the dashboard:

Inbox for the messages

Just tap a message as usual to open the conversation:

Conversation

Please note that currently messages are related to an event and only organisers may send a message to the participants.

Sending a Message

Note

Access to this feature is reserved to event organisers (a.k.a. “reviewers”).

To send a message to all participants of a given event, open the event and tap the chat icon in the toolbar:

Send a message to all participants

Former messages, if any, will be loaded and you can then use the input area at the bottom to type and send your message.

Worth mentioning: as suggested above, when you open a conversation from the dashboard, you may send another message from there as well.

Note

The recipients of a message are computed when the message is sent. This means that any member choosing to attend the event after a given message has been sent will NOT see any previous messages sent to the participants.

Other Changes

In addition, a few bugs have been squashed and minor enhancements integrated:

  • an option has been added to the Settings to let you disable the export of a single event to your calendar. Power users know that subscribing to your Lions event feed is much better (read more);

  • the edit form for social activities has been slightly reworked;

  • the application is now translated into Polish, thanks to the work of Hanna and two LEOs who helped her;

  • various internal libraries have been upgraded.

About the Large Compatibility with Versions of Android

As you see, we do our best to keep compatibility with rather old versions of Android (Android 5.1 - Lollipop dates back from March 2015 and this represents a gigantic jump in the past in the IT world).

If we keep such old compatibility (compared to Apple users), this is related to a very unfortunate fact that Android smartphones and tablets are usually maintained much less than Apple ones. In fact, manufacturers such as Samsung are selling their devices with (usually) the latest available version of Android at that time and provide major updates of the system for something that we estimate for about 2 years in contrast to Apple which supports its devices for as long as 6 years. We understand that LionsBase application users do not see any need to get a new device every 2 to 3 years (which is totally legit) and as such, we strive to keep compatibility as long as we can.

As problems arise due to this compatibility and as the number of people still actively using older devices decreases, we may drop support for some older versions at any time.
